The Eve of Arrival
No one would have thought that a chilly, insignificant Wednesday night would be the last evening humanity would spend believing it was the only intelligent species in the universe. There were those who assumed otherwise, but as it stood, accepting an inconsequential status was a feat most humans could not overcome. Not until Wednesday faded into Thursday, stars darkened, and the sun rose on a new understanding.
Man was not alone and hadn’t been for centuries. Why it chose now to reveal itself was and is still unclear. A colorful haze swelled up from below the surface and blanketed the skies like an oil spill, opaque and out of reach. The haze was reactionary to those that sought to attack it, responding in a way that could only be described as sentient. Minor earthquakes, tidal waves, and other natural disasters knocked out power across the world and sent humanity into disorder.
The Introduction of Man
Evacuation procedures were initiated over the following week and many countries enacted a procedure forcing the unaffected to take the dislocated in. Civil disputes and crime took their toll and many countries found themselves at war with one another. Unease spread, but in an unusual twist, humanity accustomed itself to the haze above and began to rebuild at a rapid pace. Recovery took the better part of a year - with electricity and water came the reestablishment of governments and a world coalition, followed quickly by a relative sense of peace. Humans were no longer the threat to one another. The threat was 26,000 feet above.
As suddenly as it blanketed the Earth, the haze began to recede. Scientists from every country, helmed by the coalition, tracked the movement until it settled and stopped over an island in the Indian Ocean. At the northern side of the Reach, dubbed this by natives in surrounding areas, the coalition established a camp for research, contact, and study. Exploring inward on the island was difficult. Equipment malfunctions forced on foot travel only and degrees of sickness were a constant issue. The coalition made broadcasts in an attempt at contact that received no response.
Decimation, Dominion, and Compliance
Illness, seemingly caused by the haze, influenced the action of all on the island. Some could travel a mile down before succumbing and others could only take a step. A group of ten made it a two days walk south before they had to stop and there, they built the tower. Changes on the island varied from extreme to subtle, and notable in this area, the tower defied the typical rules of gravity. Built from wood, it was eleven stories high and counting, swayed when the wind blew, but when inside, was as stable as any normal building.
After having very little progress exploring or response from the haze, the oil spill mist dropped from the sky and shrunk in on itself, forming a swirling dome over the southern half of the Reach. A transmission reverberated from inside.
Two distinct sets of names.
Reach is a panfandom science fiction and body horror game with adult themes and graphic content that is centered around the exploration of the Haze. Characters are either brought in via the Haze or au’d into the setting and will stay on the island for the duration of their time here.
